Colorized Imagery Communicates Complex Issues in Medical Malpractice

Imagery Enhancements Highlights Physician's Fatal Error

In this medical malpractice case, Plaintiff John Doe was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor within his colon and underwent a hemicolectomy, or the partial removal of the colon. During the procedure, the Defendant partially transected the superior mesenteric artery (SMA), causing complications. A combination of the accidental incision with low blood supply to the bowels resulted in a clot in the arteries leading to the small intestine, ultimately causing bowel ischemia - the lack of blood supply to the bowels. Bowel ischemia is a condition that can lead to several complications such as prolonging abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Enhanced Medical Imagery Used to Convey Error

The representing attorney coordinated with DK Global to utilize colorized illustrations to communicate to the jury how the hemicolectomy was performed and where the surgeon's error occurred, leading to the Plaintiff's ischemia. A 3D model was also created to emphasize the Plaintiff’s CT angiogram of the chest which captured part of the abdomen and showed the staple and occlusion in the SMA.
