As temperatures heat up and kids get out of school, many families head outdoors to enjoy summertime festivities. Trips to the beach, community pools, amusement parks, playgrounds, and campsites skyrocket during the summer months, but many people are unaware of the risks involved with these summertime activities. According to Forbes, "the most common injuries [seen in hospitals] during the summer are concussions, broken arms and lacerations, often caused by falls from monkey bars, bikes, skateboards and scooters." That statistic is followed closely by water related incidents, where drownings and watercraft injuries are a constant concern. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that, "from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2013, at least 202 children between the ages of 1 and 14 drowned in a swimming pool or spa in the United States, according to media reports compiled by the USA Swimming Foundation. Of those, 143 of the victims were children younger than age 5.” Summertime injuries are not just limited to children; an increasing number of adults also sustain injuries from power tools, barbecues, and outdoor sports. The DK team has compiled the video above highlighting the top hazardous summer activities to keep your family safe and to inform your firm of what types of cases to expect in the coming months.
