Ten people have died and over 100 people have been injured, in the United States alone, from the Takata Airbag Defect. This defect results in pieces of metal propelling from the airbags and striking the victim, frequently causing more harm that the vehicle collision itself. Most victims are left with permanent physical disfigurement to their face and body as well as emotional trauma as a result of the incidents.

The defect has caused the largest automotive recall in U.S. history, and in May the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration called for the recall of an additional estimated 35-40 million inflators (on top of the already 28.8 million that have already been recalled). On June 30th, the NHTSA also released that a certain subset of Takata airbags found in 2001-2003 Hondas and Acuras were especially dangerous with a 50% chance of rupture, as opposed to the approximately 1% chance from the other airbags in the recall. Despite the severity of the defect, LA Times reported that replacements to the airbags can take months due to inadequate supply of the required parts. In the meantime, people must continue to use their vehicles and risk possible injuries and even death.
