Two brothers were headed to their annual family fishing trip when the negligence of a semi-truck driver shattered their lives forever. As the brothers drove up the 14 Freeway, a big rig crossed over the yellow line into their lane and crashed into them head-on. Their vehicle’s entire driver’s side was obliterated, including the driver’s left arm that had been resting on the open window; the brother in the passenger’s seat broke his back and thoracic spine at three levels. The brothers survived the near-death experience, but were left with permanent injuries and PTSD from the accident.
Fortunately, the brothers were represented by some of the greatest trial attorneys around: Brian Panish and Matthew Stumpf of Panish Shea & Boyle LLP and R. Rex Parris, Bruce Schechter, and Khail A. Parris of PARRIS Law Firm. As usual, the Defense created several obstacles for the Plaintiffs, arguing that the brothers’ injuries were less serious than described. To show just how serious their injuries were, these titans of trial brought together their medical experts and DK Global to depict the catastrophic injuries and lifelong trauma the brothers will continue to experience due to the negligence of the truck driver.
DK Global’s team of artists created a series of animations depicting the invasive surgical procedures for both brothers. One animation depicted the driver’s sheared and fragmented left arm, as it was carefully debrided before hardware was placed to amend the injuries. Another animation demonstrated the kyphoplasty procedure performed on the other brother to relieve the pain along his thoracic spine – a procedure where a balloon is inserted into the vertebral space and filled with cement. Once in the heat of trial, the team of attorneys and their experts were fully equipped to walk the jury through the brothers’ devastating injuries and the excruciating surgeries performed.
The jury set a precedent to keep trucking companies accountable for their wrongdoings and negligence, returning a verdict of $53 million in favor of the brothers.
